Aqualung Carbon Capture AS (“Aqualung”) and Nitto Boseki Co., Ltd. (“Nittobo”) today announced that they have signed a joint research and development agreement to develop advanced polymer materials for CO₂ separation membranes.
With global warming making the development of efficient CO₂ separation and capture technologies from air and flue gas an urgent priority, both companies are uniting in a strong partnership to drive innovative technology development aimed at resolving this pressing societal challenge.
Under the agreement, the two companies will jointly develop and manufacture new polymer materials for use in CO₂ separation membranes and assess their suitability for industrial-scale production. Aqualung will contribute its expertise in membrane development and CO₂ separation performance testing. Nittobo will contribute its experience in polymer chemistry and specialty chemical manufacturing.
The collaboration supports Aqualung’s work to scale membrane-based capture for industrial emitters, and Nittobo’s focus on materials for environment and energy applications.
Saravanan Janakiram, Chief Technology Officer at Aqualung, said: “Materials are at the heart of membrane performance. Nittobo’s depth in polymer chemistry, and its long experience making specialty chemicals at industrial scale, make it an excellent partner as we develop the next generation of our membranes. We look forward to working closely with the Nittobo team.”
Shotaro Yasuda, Executive Officer, Division General Manager of the Material Solution Business Division at Nittobo, said: “We are delighted to partner with Aqualung—a specialist group possessing deep expertise in CO₂ separation membranes—to apply our proprietary polymer synthesis technology to the field of CO₂ capture. This collaboration reflects our vision and commitment to the environment and energy sectors, and we look forward to supporting the development efforts of Aqualung, a true innovator in the field.”
The companies will share further updates as the collaboration progresses.
